Background

He joined Murata Manufacturing in March 1974, became a Director in June 1989, Managing Director in June 1991, Senior Managing Director in June 1995 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2003. A son of the founder, his appointment in June 2007 marked the third succession within the founding family. His capital backing was thin, however: the top ten major shareholders for the fiscal year ended March 2010 were trust banks, Nippon Life Insurance, Bank of Kyoto, Shiga Bank and the like, with no Murata family members individually.

Education: Doshisha University, Faculty of Economics

Selection

In June 2007 he succeeded Yasutaka Murata as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2007, the year before, consolidated net sales were ¥566.8 billion and operating income ¥113.4 billion, the second straight year of growth from ¥414.2 billion in FY ended March 2005. The year after he took office the Lehman shock hit, and the company posted an operating loss of ¥16.3 billion in FY ended March 2009. The appointment appears to have entrusted the founding family's successor with developing sources of earnings beyond multilayer ceramic capacitors.

Initiatives

In January 2012 the company acquired Finland's VTI Technologies for about ¥20 billion to enter MEMS inertial sensors, and in March took over Renesas Electronics' power amplifier business to bolster its RF business. In December 2014 it brought in RF-SOI technology from U.S.-based Peregrine Semiconductor, and it expanded its domestic production network by bringing Iwate Murata Manufacturing under its umbrella in August 2013 and Saitama Murata Manufacturing in March 2014. In September 2017 it took over Sony's lithium-ion rechargeable battery business.
