From Hamamatsu TV to Hamamatsu Photonics: redefining the business around light (1983)

Not what a company makes, but what it seeks to master

To treat the change of name as a repainted signboard is to underrate the decision. The “TV” that Hamamatsu TV took as its name in 1953 was a concrete word, derived from one product — the industrial camera tube. Once that word was dropped in favour of “photonics,” a term few had heard, the company’s name no longer pointed at a product but at a subject of study. The phototube and the photomultiplier both became forms taken along the way in the pursuit of light. The core of the renaming lies exactly there: it declared, in the name itself, not what the company makes but what it seeks to master.

That said, there is little evidence that the word “photonics” itself produced anything material. The company registered its shares over the counter the following year and took ¥3.8 billion from Toyota Motor in 1987, but what was being valued was the photomultiplier and positron-detector technology, not the name. Nor did the underlying economics change around the renaming: research spending continued to exceed ordinary profit. Even so, for a president who had refused to be absorbed into a general electronics group, calling himself a specialist in light was also a criterion for choosing whose capital to accept.
