Background
He founded Toyo Denki Seisakusho as a sole proprietorship in December 1954 and became Representative Director and President when it was incorporated in September 1958. The founder thus became the first president. He served as President for 52 years until stepping back to Honorary Chairman in April 2010, and returned to the board as a Director in June 2016. He remained at the center of management for more than half a century after the company's founding.
Selection
As the founder, he had no predecessor. He became President when the company was incorporated in September 1958, four years after starting the business as a sole proprietorship in December 1954. There was not a single change of president from incorporation until April 2010, and the handover to Satoshi Sawamura was the first. Rather than being chosen for the post, he led the company he had founded himself.
Initiatives
During his tenure the company listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and changed its name from Toyo Denki Seisakusho to Rohm. Consolidated sales hovered around ¥350 billion, from ¥350.2 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2003 to ¥373.4 billion in FY ended March 2008, and ordinary income peaked at ¥92.1 billion in FY ended March 2004. In FY ended March 2009 sales fell to ¥317.1 billion and operating income to ¥10.5 billion, and he stepped down as President once they had recovered to ¥335.6 billion and ¥18.8 billion in FY ended March 2010.
