Background
He joined TDK in April 1981, became head of technology strategy in the Recording Devices Business Group in April 2001 and general manager of the Head Business Group in October that year, working in the division handling HDD magnetic heads. He became Executive Officer in June 2002, Senior Vice President in June 2003 and Director and Executive Vice President in June 2004.
Selection
In June 2006 he succeeded Hajime Sawabe as Representative Director and President. Sawabe had been President since June 1998 and moved to Representative Director and Chairman when Kamigama took office. Born in January 1958, Kamigama took office at 48, younger than fellow directors at the time Jiro Iwasaki (born 1945), Shinji Yoko (born 1948) and Takeshi Nomura (born 1952). He was promoted four years after becoming Executive Officer.
Initiatives
In August 2007 the company transferred its TDK-brand recording media sales business to Imation of the US. In October 2008 it acquired the German electronic components company EPCOS AG. In October 2013 it withdrew from magnetic tape production, and in March 2016 acquired the Swiss magnetic sensor company Micronas Semiconductor Holding AG. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥795.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2006 to ¥1,152.2 billion in the FY ended March 2016.
