Background
A career employee, he joined TDK in January 1982. He became Executive Officer 32 years later, in June 2014, and Senior Vice President in June 2015, rising to Representative Director and President a year after that, in June 2016. He went straight from Senior Vice President to President without serving as a Director, with only two years of executive experience when he took office.
Selection
In June 2016 he succeeded Takehiro Kamigama as Representative Director and President. In the fiscal year ended March 2016, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,152.2 billion and income before income taxes ¥91.8 billion, up from ¥1,082.5 billion and ¥74.5 billion the previous year. He was promoted one year after becoming Senior Vice President and two years after becoming Executive Officer, and his appointment appears not to have been a response to deteriorating results.
Initiatives
Between 2016 and 2017 the company acquired Micronas of Switzerland and InvenSense of the US, entering the sensor business. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥1,152.2 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2016, the year before he took office, to ¥1,902.1 billion in the FY ended March 2022, his final year. Operating income jumped to ¥211.7 billion in the FY ended March 2017, his first year, then moved around ¥100.0 billion before hitting a tenure high of ¥234.2 billion in his final year.
