Background

In April 1978 he succeeded Masaaki Yamamoto as President. In May 1982 he handed the presidency to Namio Hashimoto and withdrew to Chairman, dying the following month. He appears not to have been a long-serving insider but to have been brought in from outside only the year before taking office.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering (1941)

Selection

In the fiscal year ended March 1978, the year before he took office, the company posted an ordinary loss of ¥0.5 billion on non-consolidated net sales of ¥127.8 billion, a loss that followed shrinking ordinary income of ¥2.3 billion in the FY ended March 1976 and ¥0.5 billion in the FY ended March 1977. In August of the year he took office the management committee drew up a plan to improve the company's financial structure, and in October it sought 1,500 voluntary retirements. His predecessor Masaaki Yamamoto later said that trying to preserve jobs in expectation of a return to stable growth had backfired.

Initiatives

Around the time he set up Miyazaki Oki Electric, Miyake believed that the electronics industry could not survive without semiconductors, and that a company making only the boxes that hold components, with nothing inside, would lose its reason to exist. Organizationally, in April 1979 he moved to an SBU structure, regrouping the divisions into three: electronic communications, information processing and electronic devices. A 64-kilobit DRAM was developed in April 1980. In October that year he launched Oki Semiconductor in the US and in November Miyazaki Oki Electric, committing serious funds to semiconductors. Results improved too: non-consolidated net sales rose from ¥127.8 billion in the FY ended March 1978 to ¥214.2 billion in the FY ended March 1982, and ordinary results swung from a ¥0.5 billion loss to a ¥7.7 billion profit.
