Background
He joined the company in April 1990 and built his career in information systems, centered on financial systems. From April 2017 to March 2019 he also served as President of Hitachi Appliances. At the parent company he became Vice President and Executive Officer in April 2019, Senior Vice President and Executive Officer in April 2020 and Representative Executive Officer and Executive Vice President in April 2021. Whereas past presidents came from heavy electrical machinery, power or research laboratories, Tokunaga's roots are in information and digital.

In April 2025 he succeeded Keiji Kojima as Representative Executive Officer, President and CEO. In the fiscal year ended March 2025, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥9,783.3 billion, income before taxes ¥962.7 billion and net income ¥615.7 billion, all above the previous year. Unlike the eighth and ninth presidents, who were entrusted with recovering from losses, he took over a company that kept setting record profits.

In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 2026, consolidated revenue was ¥10,586.8 billion, income before taxes ¥1,273.1 billion and net income ¥802.4 billion; income before taxes and net income were record highs, and revenue was second only to the ¥10,881.1 billion of FY ended March 2023. Market capitalization surpassed ¥20 trillion, more than five times its level five years earlier. With the parent of GlobalLogic of the U.S., made a wholly owned subsidiary in 2021, at the core, resources were allocated to the power transmission and distribution, railway and digital businesses that remained after his predecessors' portfolio reshuffling.
