Background
Mita was a Hitachi career insider, and the 1986 edition of the corporate yearbook also records Katsushige Mita as president. The Hitachi he grew up in was in the midst of building information systems into a mainstay alongside heavy electrical machinery, having opened the Software Works in February 1969 to house contract computer development as a plant and the Systems Development Laboratory in February 1973. It had also opened the Mechanical Engineering Research Laboratory in February 1966.
Selection
He succeeded Hirokichi Yoshiyama as president in 1980. Over his predecessor's nine years, net sales had grown from ¥788.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1971 to ¥1,698.1 billion in FY ended March 1980, and ordinary income from ¥46.5 billion to ¥106.7 billion. The model of building scale by adding domestic plants had run its course; what was needed next was overseas bases and long-term research, and he appears to have been appointed to build them.
Initiatives
In June 1982 the company established Hitachi Europe, opening a European base, and in February 1989 set up Hitachi Asia. In April 1985 it opened the Advanced Research Laboratory, creating a structure to house research removed from product development. During his tenure net sales grew from ¥1,698.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1980 to ¥3,025.8 billion in FY ended March 1985, and ordinary income from ¥106.7 billion to ¥255.9 billion.
