Background

He joined the company in April 1982 and built his career in research, serving as head of the Central Research Laboratory and the Hitachi Research Laboratory. He became Vice President and Executive Officer in April 2012, Senior Vice President and Executive Officer in April 2016, and Representative Executive Officer and Executive Vice President in April 2018, then became Representative Executive Officer, President and COO in June 2021. The following April, in 2022, he also became CEO. With a career rooted not in plants or sales but in research laboratories, he appears to have been assigned to lead the digital business.

Education: Kyoto University, Graduate School of Science, Master's Program (1982)

Selection

In June 2021 he succeeded Toshiaki Higashihara as Representative Executive Officer, President and COO, while Higashihara stayed on as Chairman and CEO. In the fiscal year ended March 2021, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥8,729.1 billion, income before taxes ¥844.4 billion and net income ¥501.6 billion, a recovery from FY ended March 2020, when income before taxes had fallen to ¥180.3 billion. The change came midway through a period when the consolidation of listed subsidiaries and large acquisitions were proceeding at the same time.

Initiatives

He became CEO as well in April 2022. He completed the consolidation of listed subsidiaries begun under his predecessors, turning Hitachi Construction Machinery into an equity-method affiliate through a partial share sale in August 2022 and transferring the business of Hitachi Metals in January 2023. In 2023 Hitachi Astemo also became an equity-method affiliate through a partial share sale. During his tenure, in 2021, the company made the parent of GlobalLogic of the U.S. a wholly owned subsidiary, pursuing divestitures and acquisitions simultaneously.
