Background

He joined Hoshizaki in March 1959, became a Director the following February and Senior Managing Director in June 1965. From April 1987 he also served as Representative Director and President of Nestor, becoming its Chairman in November 2002. In the fiscal year ended June 2006 he was the largest shareholder with 9.8%, with individuals sharing his surname, Kuni Sakamoto at 7.2%, Haruyo Sakamoto at 4.97% and Seiichiro Sakamoto at 3.95%, also near the top. He served as Senior Managing Director for about 40 years.

Selection

He became Representative Director and Senior Advisor in January 2005 and Representative Director and President the following month, 40 years after becoming Senior Managing Director in June 1965 and 46 years after joining. In the fiscal year ended November 2004, before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥142.4 billion and ordinary income ¥7.4 billion, slightly up from ¥140.7 billion and ¥6.5 billion the year before. He stepped back to Representative Director and Chairman in March 2011, returned to the presidency as Representative Director, Chairman and President in June 2014, and served until March 2017.

Initiatives

In February 2006, the year after he took office, the company made LANCER CORPORATION of the U.S. a subsidiary, followed by GRAM COMMERCIAL of Denmark in September 2008, bringing in North American beverage equipment and European refrigerators. In December 2008 it listed on the First Sections of the Tokyo and Nagoya stock exchanges. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥142.4 billion in the fiscal year ended November 2004 to ¥169.4 billion with operating income of ¥13.8 billion in FY ended December 2010, and after his return to the presidency reached ¥265.5 billion with operating income of ¥34.6 billion in FY ended December 2016.
