Background
He left Alpen in September 2008 to join Hoshizaki, becoming head of the Corporate Planning Office that October and General Manager of Accounting in January 2010. He became a Director in March 2012 and Representative Director and President in March 2017, eight and a half years after joining. As of the fiscal year ended December 2010, the top ten shareholders included the Hoshizaki Green Foundation at 8.04%, Kiyoshi Sakamoto at 6.76% and the group employee stock ownership association at 6.37%, without his name. He is an outsider who came up through administration, with no capital behind him.
Selection
In March 2017 he succeeded Kiyoshi Sakamoto as president. Sakamoto had been the second-largest shareholder with 6.76% in the fiscal year ended December 2010, and the top post passed to an internally promoted executive with no shareholding. Kobayashi was promoted five years after becoming a Director in March 2012. The succession appears to have separated the founding family's holdings from the presidency.
Initiatives
In his first year, the fiscal year ended December 2017, consolidated net sales were ¥282.2 billion and operating income ¥36.1 billion, but they fell to ¥238.3 billion and ¥18.4 billion in FY ended December 2020. From FY ended December 2021, sales grew for five straight years, reaching ¥485.9 billion with operating income of ¥51.9 billion in FY ended December 2025. In January 2023 he also became president of the sales subsidiary Hoshizaki Sales.
