Background

He joined Kubota Tekko in April 1964; the company changed its name to Kubota in April 1990 during his career. He became General Manager of the Corporate Planning and Control Department in December 1998, a Director in June 1999 and Managing Director in June 2001. In April 2003, in his 39th year with the company, he became Representative Director and President. He rose to the presidency from the administrative side without ever heading a business division.

Selection

In April 2003 he succeeded Kohei Mitsui as Representative Director and President. In the fiscal year ended March 2003, just before, consolidated net sales were ¥925.7 billion with a net loss of ¥8.0 billion, a swing into the red from net income of ¥9.5 billion the year before. Only one year and ten months passed between his becoming Managing Director and becoming president. Right after a loss-making year, the company chose a man who had worked not in a business division but in head office corporate planning.

Initiatives

In August 2004 the company made The Siam Kubota Industry of Thailand a subsidiary, and it established Siam Kubota Tractor there in September 2007 and Tata Metaliks Kubota Pipes in India in October of that year. In April 2005 it set up Kubota-C.I. by integrating its plastic pipe business with C.I. Kasei. In June 2005 it decided to pay consolation payments to asbestos-related disease patients living around the former Kanzaki plant, converting them into a relief payment system in April 2006. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥925.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2003 to ¥1,154.5 billion in FY ended March 2008, with consolidated operating income of ¥136.9 billion.
