Background
He graduated from Tokyo University of Commerce in 1927, joined the company and came up through accounting. He became head-office accounting manager in 1951, Director and accounting manager in 1954, a Managing Director in 1956 and Executive Vice President in 1959. When he joined the board he was accounting manager, having never run a plant or a business division. Among executives who had come from plants, heading the Nikko copper refinery, the Yokohama cable plant and the Osaka copper-rolling plant, his was a rare path.
Selection
In November 1960 he succeeded Yukihisa Koizumi, who became Chairman, as President, a year after becoming Executive Vice President. The Senior Managing Directors at the time were Yoshio Yamazaki, who became Director and head of the cable department in 1952, and Keizo Ikeda, who became Director and head of the Yokohama cable plant in 1951, both joining the board before Uematsu did in 1954. Rather than the two production-side Senior Managing Directors with longer board tenure, the Executive Vice President who started as accounting manager rose to President.
Initiatives
In March 1961, four months after he took office, the company opened the Chiba cable plant, adding a production base after the Hiratsuka cable plant of September 1958. In 1959, the year before he took office, executives held only two division-head posts, cable and metals, but by 1970, after he left, the board included heads of the power, telecommunications, copper-rolling, special products and overseas divisions. Over his eight years, an organization grouped into cable and metals was divided by application. In November 1968 he stepped back to Chairman, and Managing Director Jiro Suzuki became President.
