Background

He graduated from Tokyo Higher Commercial School in 1918 and joined Yokohama Cable Manufacturing. He became a Director and plant head in 1947 and a Managing Director in 1949, and was named President in 1955. While President he also served as president of Furukawa Aluminium Industry and as a director of Furukawa Chemical Industry and Furukawa Magnesium, holding concurrent posts across the Furukawa group's non-ferrous companies. He rose to President not through cable production but through accounting and management control.

Education: Tokyo Higher Commercial School (now Hitotsubashi University) (1918)

Selection

In 1955 he succeeded Keizo Nishimura as President, 37 years after joining in 1918 and eight years after joining the board in 1947. As of 1960, late in his tenure, the two Senior Managing Directors were Yoshio Yamazaki, a Kyoto Imperial University graduate who had been head of the cable department, and Keizo Ikeda, a Tokyo Imperial University graduate who had headed the Yokohama cable plant. Amid Managing Directors and above with engineering backgrounds and plant management experience, Koizumi, a Tokyo Higher Commercial School graduate, served as President.

Initiatives

During his tenure, in September 1958, the company opened the Hiratsuka cable plant, placing a production base in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, after Yokohama, Nikko, Kyushu and Osaka. After the battery division was spun off as Furukawa Battery in September 1950, Koizumi himself kept control of the affiliated companies by serving as president of Furukawa Aluminium Industry and a director of Furukawa Chemical Industry. In November 1960 he stepped back to Chairman, handing the presidency to Executive Vice President Kiyoshi Uematsu.
