Background

He graduated from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1935 and joined the company. He became a Director in November 1962 and a Managing Director in June 1964, and headed the Power division from November 1966. Whereas his predecessor Kiyoshi Uematsu was an administrator who had risen from accounting manager to Executive Vice President, Suzuki became President from leading the power cable business. He went straight from Managing Director to President without serving as Executive Vice President.

Education: Tokyo Institute of Technology (1935)

Selection

In November 1968 he succeeded Kiyoshi Uematsu, who became Chairman, as President. That same month Masao Funabashi, Keikichi Shirayanagi and Masatoshi Morioka all became Managing Directors and Nobuo Nohara a Senior Managing Director. All four had joined in 1935 or 1936, making them contemporaries of Suzuki, who joined in 1935. With his cohort lined up side by side on the board, the engineer who had led the Power division was chosen as President.

Initiatives

In March 1971 the company opened the Mie plant, adding a production base after Hiratsuka in 1958 and Chiba in 1961. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥166.1 billion in FY ended March 1971 to ¥257.9 billion in FY ended March 1974, before he stepped down. Ordinary profit rose from ¥2.0 billion to ¥7.5 billion over the same period. In November 1974 he stepped down as President, handing over to Executive Vice President Masao Funabashi.
