Background

Hajime Bada joined Kawasaki Steel in April 1973 and became a Director 27 years later, in June 2000. NKK and Kawasaki Steel established JFE Holdings through a share transfer in September 2002, and in April 2003 reorganized both companies by corporate split into four companies, including JFE Steel. In this reorganization Bada became Senior Managing Executive Officer of JFE Steel, and in April 2005 its Representative Director and President. He also served as a Director of JFE Holdings from June 2005 and as a Representative Director from April 2009.

Education: University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Engineering, Metallurgy, Master's Program (1973)

Selection

In FY ended March 2010, just before he took over, JFE Holdings' consolidated net sales were ¥2,844.3 billion, down more than ¥1 trillion from ¥3,908.2 billion the year before, and operating profit fell from ¥407.8 billion to ¥88.8 billion. In April 2010 Bada stepped down as president of JFE Steel and became Representative Director and President of the holding company, taking on the role of CEO. That same April, Eiji Hayashida became president of JFE Steel. The sequence had the president of the steel operating company succeed to the holding company presidency.

Initiatives

In 2009, while president of JFE Steel, Bada signed a comprehensive alliance with JSW Steel, a major Indian private steelmaker, providing technology for high-grade automotive steel and supplying semi-finished products. At the holding company, JFE Shoji became a wholly owned subsidiary through a share exchange in October 2012, and in January 2013 Universal Shipbuilding and IHI Marine United were integrated to form Japan Marine United. Consolidated net sales rose from ¥3,195.5 billion in FY ended March 2011 to ¥3,850.3 billion in FY ended March 2015, and operating profit from ¥182.8 billion to ¥222.6 billion.
