Background

He joined Kawasaki Steel in April 1977. He became Managing Executive Officer of JFE Steel in April 2007 and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2010, then the company's Representative Director and Executive Vice President in April 2012 and Representative Director and President in April 2015. From that June he also served as a Representative Director of the holding company JFE Holdings. From the former Kawasaki Steel, he moved to the holding company presidency after four years as president of the operating company.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics (1977)

Selection

In April 2019 he succeeded Eiji Hayashida as Representative Director, President and CEO, at the same time stepping down as president of JFE Steel and moving from the operating company to the holding company. In FY ended March 2019, just before he took over, consolidated net sales were ¥3,961.7 billion and operating profit ¥221.8 billion, both up on the year before. With the steel business earning well, the appointment appears to have elevated someone with four years as operating company president to the holding company.

Initiatives

In his first year, FY ended March 2020, the company posted a consolidated operating loss of ¥200.9 billion and a net loss of ¥197.7 billion. A net loss of ¥21.8 billion followed in FY ended March 2021, making two straight years in the red. FY ended March 2022 saw a return to operating profit of ¥400.2 billion and net income of ¥288.0 billion, and in his final year, FY ended March 2024, consolidated net sales were ¥5,174.6 billion and operating profit ¥287.0 billion. Consolidated employees were nearly unchanged, from 62,083 before he took office to 62,218.
