Background

Eiji Hayashida joined Kawasaki Steel in April 1973 and became Managing Executive Officer of JFE Holdings in September 2002. After rising at the holding company to Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2005 and Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in June 2008, he moved to JFE Steel as Representative Director and Executive Vice President in April 2009. In April 2010 he succeeded Hajime Bada as Representative Director and President of JFE Steel, serving five years.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Economics (1973)

Selection

In April 2015 Hayashida handed the JFE Steel presidency to Koji Kakigi and became Representative Director and President of JFE Holdings, taking on the role of CEO. It was the second time, after Hajime Bada in 2010, that a former president of JFE Steel succeeded to the presidency of the holding company. In his first year, FY ended March 2016, consolidated net sales were ¥3,431.7 billion, down ¥418.6 billion from ¥3,850.3 billion the year before, and operating profit fell from ¥222.6 billion to ¥90.6 billion.

Initiatives

Hayashida served four years, from April 2015 to April 2019. Consolidated net sales recovered from ¥3,431.7 billion in FY ended March 2016 to ¥3,961.7 billion in FY ended March 2019, operating profit rose from ¥90.6 billion to ¥221.8 billion and net income from ¥33.6 billion to ¥164.2 billion. Consolidated employees grew from 59,460 to 62,083 over the same period. At the holding company the CFO was Shinichi Okada, from the former NKK, while JFE Steel's president was Koji Kakigi, from the former Kawasaki Steel, so even 15 years after the integration, alumni of both companies sat side by side as Representative Directors.
