Background

Born in December 1949, he joined the family business run by his father and in April 1973 became Senior Managing Director of Maruwa Ceramic Co., Ltd., founded in Seto, Aichi Prefecture. As his condition for joining, he asked to take on alumina substrates for Kyocera. His father stepped down at the founding, with his brother Yoshiki Kanbe, eight years his senior, as President and Makoto as Senior Managing Director in charge of manufacturing and sales. After sales of ceramics for fixed resistors plateaued at fourth or fifth among seven competitors, he built substrates for chip resistors, proposed by a customer, into the mainstay of the electronic-circuit ceramics business, earning the company a reputation as "Maruwa, the chip maker."

Education: Aichi Institute of Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering

Selection

In June 1992 he became Representative Director and President, taking over from his brother Yoshiki Kanbe, who had been President since the founding in 1973. In December 1989, two and a half years before, he had set up a production subsidiary in Malaysia and a sales subsidiary in Taiwan, serving as president of both, and he moved to the head office presidency while still overseeing the launch of overseas production. As of the end of March 1998, six years after he took office, the largest shareholder was still Maruwa Gomei Kaisha with 31.6%, his brother held 3.1% and he held 2.9%, so the founding family dominated the top ranks.

Initiatives

In August 1995, three years after he took office, the company registered its shares for over-the-counter trading with the Japan Securities Dealers Association, using part of the capital raised to build a third plant at its Malaysian subsidiary. It listed on the Second Sections of the Tokyo and Nagoya stock exchanges in December 1998 and was designated to the First Section in March 2000. In April 2005 it set up MARUWA SHOMEI to enter high-brightness LED lighting, and in December 2012 acquired all shares of Yamagiwa. In April 2022 he stepped back to Representative Director and Chairman, handing the presidency to his eldest son, Toshiro Kanbe.
