Background

He joined AGC in April 1980 and became an Executive Officer 29 years later, in January 2009, then Managing Executive Officer in January 2013. Just before becoming President he was Managing Executive Officer and President of the Electronics Company, moving from heading an in-house business company to the top of the parent. He became President and CEO in January 2015 and Representative Director, President and CEO in March of that year, 35 years after joining.

In January 2015 he succeeded Kazuhiko Ishimura as President and CEO. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended December 2014, net sales were ¥1,348.3 billion, operating profit ¥62.1 billion and net income ¥15.9 billion; operating profit had fallen ¥17.8 billion from ¥79.9 billion the prior year, on sales of ¥1,320.0 billion. The major shareholders were trust banks and life and non-life insurers; the largest in FY ended December 2014 was The Master Trust Bank of Japan with 4.56%, and there was no controlling shareholder.

Initiatives

In his first year, FY ended December 2015, net sales were ¥1,326.2 billion and operating profit ¥71.2 billion. In FY ended December 2018 operating profit reached ¥120.6 billion and net income ¥89.5 billion, the highest of his tenure. The workforce grew by 5,327, from 50,852 in FY ended December 2015 to 56,179 in FY ended December 2020. In his final year, FY ended December 2020, net sales were ¥1,412.3 billion and operating profit ¥75.8 billion; in January 2021 he stepped back to Representative Director and Chairman and was succeeded by Yoshinori Hirai.
