Background

He joined Asahi Glass (now AGC) in April 1979. He became an Executive Officer in January 2006 and Director, President and COO in March 2008. It took him 27 years to go from new hire to Executive Officer, but only two years from Executive Officer to President. In January 2010 he became Director, President and CEO, shifting his title from chief operating officer to chief executive officer.

Selection

In March 2008 he succeeded Masahiro Kadomatsu as Director, President and COO. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended December 2007, consolidated net sales were ¥1,681.2 billion and operating profit ¥197.5 billion; that sales figure was never surpassed in any of his seven years in office. In his first year, FY ended December 2008, sales dropped to ¥1,444.3 billion and net income to ¥39.1 billion, and in FY ended December 2009 they shrank further to ¥1,148.1 billion and ¥19.9 billion. The handover coincided with the global financial crisis.

Initiatives

He reorganized the company into an in-house company system with each business as its own management unit, and unified the group brand under AGC. Consolidated results peaked during his tenure in FY ended December 2010, with operating profit of ¥229.2 billion and net income of ¥123.1 billion, then fell to operating profit of ¥79.9 billion and net income of ¥10.3 billion in FY ended December 2013. In his final year, FY ended December 2014, net sales were ¥1,348.3 billion and operating profit ¥62.1 billion. The consolidated workforce rose by 3,344, from 47,770 in FY ended December 2008 to 51,114 in FY ended December 2014.
