Background

He joined AGC in April 1987 and became an Executive Officer 25 years later, in January 2012. He was promoted to Managing Executive Officer in January 2014, to Director and Managing Executive Officer in March of the same year, and to Representative Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer and CTO in January 2018. After three years heading the technology function, he became Representative Director, President and CEO in January 2021.

Education: University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Engineering, Doctoral Program (1987)

Selection

In January 2021 he succeeded Takuya Shimamura as President and CEO, with Shimamura moving to Representative Director and Chairman. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended December 2020, net sales were ¥1,412.3 billion, operating profit ¥75.8 billion and net income ¥32.7 billion; compared with ¥1,522.9 billion, ¥120.6 billion and ¥89.5 billion in FY ended December 2018, operating profit had fallen for two straight years. Moving directly from CTO to CEO, his appointment elevated someone from the technical side.

Initiatives

He championed "ambidextrous management": earning stable profits from core businesses while investing in high-growth strategic businesses. In his first year, FY ended December 2021, net sales were ¥1,697.3 billion, operating profit ¥206.2 billion and net income ¥123.8 billion, with operating profit up ¥130.4 billion year on year. In FY ended December 2022 net sales passed the ¥2 trillion mark at ¥2,035.8 billion, yet the company posted a net loss of ¥3.1 billion. In FY ended December 2024 it again booked a net loss of ¥94.0 billion despite operating profit of ¥125.8 billion, before returning to net income of ¥69.1 billion in FY ended December 2025.
