Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Keio University in March 1926 and joined Yokohama Rubber Manufacturing in November 1931. He became a Director in August 1948, reaching the board 17 years after joining. In May 1957 he left his post as President of Tokyo Toyota Motor to become Managing Director of Yokohama Rubber Manufacturing, and that August he became Senior Managing Director. He was born in Kochi in 1902.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Economics (1926)

Selection

He became Director and Executive Vice President in August 1963, and in February 1965 succeeded Kazuo Oyama as President. It took a year and a half from Executive Vice President to President. In March 1963 Yasuo Tamaki had moved over from Dai-Ichi Bank and became a Director that August, so a homegrown president and an officer from banking came together at the same time.

Initiatives

During his tenure, officers' responsibilities included heads of the Tire Sales Division, the Tire Production Division, the Industrial Products Division and the Aircraft Parts Division, a structure that assigned separate heads to tires and industrial products. The directors included Gerard Alexander, an American who had worked at DuPont and B.F. Goodrich, suggesting that relations with the partner company were reflected in the board's makeup. In February 1973 he handed the presidency to Koji Yoshitake and became Chairman.
