Background

He joined Yokohama Rubber in April 1969, became deputy head of the Shinshiro plant in May 1994 and went out to Yokohama Tire Philippines Inc. as President in July 1996. He became a Director in June 1999, head of the Tire Production Division in November 2000, Managing Director and head of the Tire Planning Division in June 2002, and Senior Managing Director in charge of tires in June 2003, rising entirely within the tire business, from production to planning. The officers section of the annual securities report for the fiscal year ended March 2009 lists his shareholding at 47,000 shares.

In June 2004, a year after taking charge of tires in June 2003, he became Representative Director and President. Consolidated revenue had been nearly flat, from ¥399.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2002 to ¥401.7 billion in FY ended March 2004, with ordinary income stuck in the ¥17 billion range. Among other directors on the same officer list, Tatsunari Kojima, who joined in 1971, became a Director in 2002, 31 years after joining, and Norio Karashima, who joined in 1976, in 2008, after 32 years, whereas Nagumo, who joined in 1969, did so in 1999 after 30 years, reaching the board earlier from the production side.

Initiatives

Consolidated revenue grew from ¥401.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2004, before he took office, to ¥551.4 billion in FY ended March 2008, and ordinary income from ¥17.3 billion to ¥25.2 billion. In FY ended March 2009 results fell to revenue of ¥517.2 billion, ordinary income of ¥0.4 billion and a net loss of ¥5.6 billion, before ordinary income recovered to ¥18.7 billion in FY ended March 2010. Consolidated employees increased from 13,264 in FY ended March 2004 to 18,465 in FY ended March 2011. In June 2011 he stepped down as President and became Representative Director, Chairman and CEO.
