Background

He joined The Industrial Bank of Japan in April 1989 and moved to Merrill Lynch Japan Securities in March 2000. There he became a Director in January 2016 and Vice Chairman of Investment Banking that June. He joined Nippon Paint in November 2019 as Senior Managing Executive Officer and became CFO in January 2020. He was an outsider with a finance background in banking and investment banking and no career in the paint business.

Selection

In April 2021 he became Representative Executive Officer and Co-President, succeeding Masaaki Tanaka. He took office as co-president rather than sole president, a promotion one year and three months after becoming CFO. In the fiscal year before he took office, ended December 2020, consolidated revenue was ¥772.5 billion, operating income ¥87.6 billion and net income ¥43.9 billion. The change came right after the Asian joint ventures were made wholly owned subsidiaries through the third-party allotment to Wuthelam decided by his predecessor Tanaka.

Initiatives

In his first year, the fiscal year ended December 2021, consolidated revenue was ¥998.2 billion and net income ¥67.5 billion, revenue up ¥225.7 billion from the year before. Revenue grew to ¥1,309.0 billion with operating income of ¥111.9 billion in FY ended December 2022, and to ¥1,442.5 billion and ¥168.7 billion in FY ended December 2023. In FY ended December 2025, revenue was ¥1,774.2 billion, operating income ¥257.1 billion and net income ¥179.8 billion, 2.3 times the scale of the year before he took office. Employees increased from 27,318 in FY ended December 2020 to 34,393 in FY ended December 2023.
