Background

Born in Kanagawa in 1918, he graduated from Hosei University in March 1941 and joined Nippon Paint that April. He became head of Osaka Sales in April 1969 and was promoted to Director two months later, in June. He became head of the Sales Division in November 1970, Managing Director in June 1973, Senior Managing Director in July 1975 and Director and Executive Vice President in July 1978; from the time he became a department head, he handled sales throughout.

Education: Hosei University (1941)

Selection

In July 1981 he became President, succeeding Ryutaro Nakajima. The promotion followed three years as Executive Vice President, and Chiaki Obata, the president before last, stayed on as Chairman. Kazuo Sasaki, who became Senior Managing Director alongside him in July 1978, had joined in 1943 and become a Director in June 1973; Suzuki joined in 1941 and became a Director in June 1969, four years earlier, and had headed the Sales Division since November 1970.

Initiatives

In July 1981, the month he took office, he reshuffled the board. He promoted an officer who had gone from head of Tokyo Sales to head of Market Development to Managing Director, and made Toru Sekine, head of the Purchasing Division, a Director. Three Senior Managing Directors, Kazuo Sasaki, Yasuo Uchida and Masuo Onishi, served side by side, and Chiaki Obata remained Chairman.
