Background

He joined Shionogi & Co. in April 1982 and became a Director 20 years later, in June 2002. He served as Managing Executive Officer from April 2004 and Senior Managing Executive Officer from April 2006, and became Representative Director and President in April 2008. It was 26 years from joining to the presidency and six years from joining the board. In the fiscal year ended March 2009, the year after he took office, the major shareholders were trust banks along with corporations such as Sumitomo Life Insurance at 5.30% and Nippon Life Insurance at 3.74%, with no individuals in the top ten.

In the fiscal year ended March 2008, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥214.2 billion, operating income ¥40.4 billion and net income ¥25.0 billion, up from ¥199.7 billion, ¥28.9 billion and ¥18.5 billion the year before. The promotion came after six years as a Director, including two as Senior Managing Executive Officer.

Initiatives

In 2008, the year he took office, the company made Sciele Pharma of the US a wholly owned subsidiary through a tender offer, gaining a US sales base. In 2012 it transferred its HIV joint venture stake to Britain's ViiV Healthcare, acquiring 10% of that company's shares and switching to royalty income. In 2022 its oral COVID-19 drug Xocova was approved under the emergency approval system. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥214.2 billion in the year before he took office to ¥499.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2026, and operating income from ¥40.4 billion to ¥166.7 billion.
