Background

He joined Sumitomo Chemical in April 1981 and moved to Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma (now Sumitomo Pharma) in January 2008. In June 2008, the same year as the move, he became an Executive Officer, then Director and Executive Officer in June 2012, Director and Managing Executive Officer in April 2014, Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2016 and Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2017, reaching the presidency ten years after the move. Sumitomo Chemical was the largest shareholder, holding 50.12% of the shares outstanding in both FY ended March 2010 and FY ended March 2015.

In April 2018 he became Representative Director and President, succeeding Masayo Tada. He had become Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2017, rising to President in one year while holding representative authority. In 2019 the company formed an alliance with Britain's Roivant, making Sumitovant a subsidiary and acquiring 11% of Roivant's shares. In April 2022 it changed its name from Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma to Sumitomo Pharma. Results deteriorated to a consolidated operating loss of ¥77.0 billion and net loss of ¥74.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2023, and consolidated revenue of ¥314.5 billion with an operating loss of ¥354.9 billion and net loss of ¥314.9 billion in FY ended March 2024. He launched structural reforms, including halving the North American workforce and trimming the pipeline, and consolidated employees fell from 6,987 in FY ended March 2022 to 4,980 in FY ended March 2024.
