Background

Born in 1892, he graduated from Tokyo Higher Commercial School in June 1915 and joined Mitsui & Co. He became a director of Dainippon Celluloid in 1937, moved to the company in 1940 as Managing Director, and became Senior Managing Director in 1943. His career took him from trading-company sales to an executive post at a chemical company, with no experience in plants or research. He became President in 1955 and Chairman in 1964.

Education: Tokyo Higher Commercial School (now Hitotsubashi University) (1915)

Selection

He became President in 1955. The promotion came 15 years after he joined in 1940 and after 12 years as Senior Managing Director. Yoshitoshi Yamawaki, who joined from Iwai Sangyo in the same year, 1940, became Managing Director in 1949 and Senior Managing Director in 1955, and succeeded him as President nine years later. Two men who joined in the same year from Mitsui & Co. and Iwai Sangyo lined up directly as President and successor.

Initiatives

During his tenure, in August 1958, the Sakai Plant began producing acetate tow, opening up its use in cigarette filters. In January 1961 the company established Dainippon Kasei and entered petroleum-based organic synthesis. A company that began with celluloid and photographic film base spread out in this period in two directions, cellulose acetate and petrochemicals. He became Chairman in 1964.
