Background

Born in Kochi in 1900, he graduated from Yamaguchi Higher Commercial School in March 1922 and joined Iwai Sangyo. He moved to Dainippon Celluloid in May 1940, becoming a Director in December 1946, Managing Director in January 1949, Senior Managing Director in 1955 and Executive Vice President in 1961. After moving from a trading company he spent 24 years at the company, becoming President in 1964.

Education: Yamaguchi Higher Commercial School (now Yamaguchi University, Faculty of Economics) (1922)

Selection

In 1964 he became President, succeeding Tetsuo Yuki. Yuki moved to Chairman the same year and still heads the officer listing as Representative Director and Chairman in the 1966 edition of the directory. Also in 1964, Yuzuru Kimura rose from Senior Managing Director to Executive Vice President, so the change moved both the Executive Vice President and the Senior Managing Director up one step each. The promotion came three years after he became Executive Vice President in 1961.

Initiatives

In May 1964, when he took office, the company established Polyplastics as a joint venture with Celanese of the US. In February 1966 it changed its name from Dainippon Celluloid to Daicel, and in June 1968 it absorbed Dainippon Kasei, making it the Otake Plant. In July 1970 it established Daicel-Hüls as a joint venture with Hüls of West Germany. This was the period in which "celluloid" disappeared from the company name and resin businesses through joint ventures began.
