Background

Born in Tokyo in 1909, he graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Tokyo Imperial University in March 1933. He joined Mitsui Bank and rose to Senior Managing Director before becoming President of Daicel in January 1971. The career history in the company directory's officer listing consists of just two lines, "former Senior Managing Director of Mitsui Bank" and his appointment as President, and he had no experience working at a chemical company or any internal career. He appears as Representative Director and President in every edition of the directory from 1976 to 1979.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Economics (now University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics) (1933)

Selection

His predecessor Yoshitoshi Yamawaki had been President since 1964 and is listed as President through the 1970 edition of the directory; the change took place in January 1971. Within the company was Yoshikimi Otsuki, who had become Executive Vice President in January 1969, and even after the President came in from outside, Otsuki remained Executive Vice President until stepping back to Director and Senior Adviser in November 1974. Someone from the company's main bank became President over a person who had risen within the company to Executive Vice President.

Initiatives

During his tenure, in July 1977, the company established Kyodo Sakusan as a joint venture with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, Denki Kagaku Kogyo, Kyowa Hakko Kogyo and Chisso. In October 1979 it changed its name from Daicel to Daicel Chemical Industries. Among the executives, in November 1974 Yoshifumi Kubota, who joined in 1951, and Toshio Nakata, who joined in 1940, were promoted together to Senior Managing Director, putting people raised within the company at the core of management.
