Background

He joined Shin-Etsu Chemical in April 1978 and became a Director in June 2001, Managing Director in June 2002 and Senior Managing Director in June 2005. He became Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in July 2007 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2010. In January 2011 he also became President of the subsidiary Shintech. A career employee who spent 38 years at the one company from joining to the presidency, he ran an overseas subsidiary while serving as Executive Vice President.

Education: Waseda University, School of Political Science and Economics, Economics (1978)

Selection

In June 2016 he became President, succeeding Shunzo Mori. The promotion came after six years as Representative Director and Executive Vice President from June 2010. In the fiscal year ended March 2016, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,279.8 billion and operating income ¥208.5 billion, up from ¥1,255.5 billion and ¥185.3 billion the previous year. Rather than a change aimed at a turnaround, the appointment appears to have been one in which he simply inherited growing earnings.

Initiatives

Consolidated net sales grew from ¥1,279.8 billion in the year before he took office to ¥2,808.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2023, and operating income from ¥208.5 billion to ¥998.2 billion. In FY ended March 2024 they fell to net sales of ¥2,414.9 billion and operating income of ¥701.0 billion, and in FY ended March 2026 they were ¥2,574.0 billion and ¥635.2 billion. In semiconductor materials he has pointed to GaN devices with an eye on the power demand of generative AI, and has set out a policy of filling technology gaps through partnerships with other companies rather than doing everything in-house.
