Background

He joined Shin-Etsu Chemical in February 1962. He became a Director in January 1975, Managing Director in August 1976 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in August 1983. From March 1978 he also served as President of Shintech, leading it for 33 years until moving to Chairman of that company in January 2011. In the 12 years before becoming President, he served as an executive of the parent company while running the subsidiary at the same time.

The promotion came seven years after he became Representative Director and Executive Vice President in August 1983, and 28 years after he joined in February 1962. In FY ended March 2009 net sales were ¥1,200.8 billion and operating income ¥232.9 billion, and in FY ended March 2010, the year he stepped down, net sales were ¥916.8 billion and operating income ¥117.2 billion, sales falling to the 60% range of FY ended March 2008. In June 2010 he handed the presidency to Shunzo Mori and became Representative Director and Chairman.
