Background

He joined Kurabo Industries in April 1983, served as manager of the Kamogata Plant from April 2008 and as General Manager of Chemical Products Operations in the Chemical Products Division from June 2010. He became Director, Executive Officer and head of the Corporate Planning Office in June 2012 and Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 2013, becoming President in his 31st year with the company. A career employee who handled corporate planning after plant operations and the chemical products business, he took over a company whose top ten shareholders in the FY ended March 2006 were financial institutions such as Nippon Life Insurance at 4.65% and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation at 4.52%, with no individuals among them.

Selection

In June 2014 he succeeded Akihiro Inoue as Representative Director and President. In the FY ended March 2014, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥164.8 billion, operating income ¥3.0 billion and net income ¥1.5 billion, with an operating margin of just 1.8%. He was named two years after joining the board and one year after becoming Managing Executive Officer, and the change appears to have assigned a former head of corporate planning to reshape a low-profit business portfolio.

Initiatives

Over his ten years, consolidated net sales fell by 10% from ¥169.5 billion in the FY ended March 2015 to ¥151.3 billion in the FY ended March 2024, while operating income rose from ¥2.7 billion to ¥9.2 billion and net income from ¥1.1 billion to ¥6.7 billion. After sales dropped to ¥122.2 billion and operating income to ¥3.2 billion in the FY ended March 2021, operating income recovered to ¥7.5 billion the next year, in the FY ended March 2022. Over the decade the consolidated operating margin rose from 1.6% to 6.1%.
