Background
He joined Mitsukoshi in May 1972. He became an Executive Officer in February 2003 and Managing Executive Officer in March 2005, and in May of that year Representative Director and President of Mitsukoshi. It was 33 years from joining to the presidency. When Mitsukoshi and Isetan set up a joint holding company in April 2008, he moved from President of Mitsukoshi to the holding company's first President.
Selection
In April 2008 he became the first President of Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings, launched through the business integration of Mitsukoshi and Isetan. He had been Representative Director and President of Mitsukoshi until then, so the head of one of the integrating companies moved straight into the holding company presidency. In the first year of the integration, the FY ended March 2009, sales were ¥1,426.6 billion and operating income ¥45.6 billion, but net income was only ¥4.6 billion.
Initiatives
In the FY ended March 2010, the year after he took office, sales fell to ¥1,291.6 billion, with operating income of ¥4.2 billion and a net loss of ¥63.5 billion. In the FY ended March 2011, his final year, sales were ¥1,220.7 billion, operating income recovered to ¥11.0 billion and net income to ¥2.6 billion. In April 2011 he merged the subsidiaries Mitsukoshi and Isetan, combining the two operating companies into a single company, Mitsukoshi Isetan. In February 2012 he stepped down to Representative Director, Chairman and Executive Officer.
