Background

He joined Isetan in April 1987. Isetan and Mitsukoshi merged in April 2008 by setting up a joint holding company, Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings, and after the integration Hosoya became an Executive Officer of Isetan Mitsukoshi in April 2015 and of the holding company in April 2017. From April 2018 he concurrently served as Representative Director, President and Executive Officer of Iwataya Mitsukoshi, running the regional subsidiary in Fukuoka for three years.

Selection

In April 2021 he succeeded Toshihiko Sugie as Representative Executive Officer, President and CEO, adding a board seat in June that year. In the FY ended March 2021, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥816.0 billion with an operating loss of ¥21.0 billion and a net loss of ¥41.0 billion, a swing into the red from operating income of ¥15.7 billion the year before. He moved to the holding company presidency while still President of Iwataya Mitsukoshi, so management of a regional subsidiary was his immediate track record.

Initiatives

During his tenure, consolidated operating income rose from ¥5.9 billion in the FY ended March 2022 to ¥80.0 billion in the FY ended March 2026, and net income from ¥12.3 billion to ¥76.1 billion. Consolidated net sales also grew from ¥418.3 billion to ¥545.6 billion over the same period, restoring profitability within four years of the FY ended March 2021, when the pandemic produced an operating loss of ¥21.0 billion.
