Background

He joined Ajinomoto in April 1971 and moved to Hagoromo Foods seven years later, in April 1978. He advanced to general manager of general affairs in February 1980, Director in June 1983 and Managing Director in June 1985, becoming president eight years after moving. Family members line the board. The annual securities report for the FY ended March 2015 notes that the then president Kenichi Ikeda was the son-in-law of Goto himself, then Representative Director and Chairman, that Managing Director Saeko Goto was his eldest daughter, and that Director Kiyoo Goto was his younger brother.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Economics (1971)

Selection

In June 1986 he rose from Managing Director and general manager of general affairs to Representative Director and President. The promotion came three years after he became a director in June 1983 and eight years after he moved from Ajinomoto. His career ran through general affairs, without heading production or sales. His tenure lasted 21 years until June 2007, when he moved directly to Representative Director and Chairman.

Initiatives

In 2000 the company listed its shares on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. In April 2005 it brought the dried foods maker Maruai under its umbrella, with Goto himself also serving as its Representative Director and Chairman. In the FY ended March 2006, after the shift to consolidated reporting, net sales were ¥81.9 billion and operating income ¥0.6 billion, with a net loss of ¥1.2 billion. Non-consolidated net sales had fallen from ¥76.7 billion in the FY ended March 2002 to ¥70.6 billion in the FY ended March 2005. The acquisition appears to have been a move to supplement the shrinking core company.
