Background
He joined Ajinomoto in April 1967. He became a director in October 2000, 33 years after joining. He advanced to Managing Director in June 2001 and Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in June 2003, and became Director, President and Chief Executive Officer in June 2005. It took four years and eight months from joining the board to the presidency. On stepping down as president in June 2009 he became Chairman.

In June 2005 he succeeded Kunio Egashira as Director, President and Chief Executive Officer. In the fiscal year ended March 2005, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,073.0 billion and operating income ¥70.9 billion. Sales had kept growing from ¥1,039.5 billion in the FY ended March 2004, so the change did not come amid a crisis. The appointment handed him a business that had reached the ¥1 trillion scale.
Initiatives
During his tenure consolidated net sales grew from ¥1,106.8 billion in the FY ended March 2006 to ¥1,216.5 billion in the FY ended March 2008. Operating income never exceeded the ¥70.9 billion of the year before he took office and fell to ¥40.8 billion in the FY ended March 2009. That year's net result was a loss of ¥10.2 billion, the only net loss in his four years. Consolidated headcount rose from 25,812 in the FY ended March 2005 to 26,869 in the FY ended March 2009.
