Background
He was born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1909, graduated in political science from the Faculty of Law of Tokyo Imperial University in 1931 and joined Dai-Ichi Bank. He left the bank in 1938 and moved to Ajinomoto that same year. He became head office manager in 1946, Director in 1948, Managing Director in 1949 and Executive Vice President in November 1959. It took him ten years from joining to reach the board. He also served as a corporate auditor of Nihon Amino Shiryo Kogyo from 1961 and of Sanraku-Ocean from February 1967.
Selection
In May 1965 he succeeded Toyonobu Domen as President. Among career employees listed in the same officer roster, Bunzo Watanabe had taken 19 years from joining in 1930 to reach the board, and Hideo Kidosaki 20 years from joining in 1925. Kyoji Suzuki, who joined in 1938 and took ten years, reached the board nine to ten years faster than these two. Among major shareholders in the FY ended March 1961 were Shigeaki Suzuki at 4.4% and Saburosuke Suzuki at 1.3%. The appointment appears to have handed management to an officer named Suzuki who had come in via a bank.
Initiatives
Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥125.2 billion in the FY ended March 1971 to ¥145.2 billion in the FY ended March 1973. Ordinary income over the same three years moved from ¥6.5 billion to ¥6.0 billion to ¥8.0 billion, dipping once in the FY ended March 1972. Seasonings, which made up 59.0% of non-consolidated sales in the FY ended March 1961 before he took office, had fallen to 24% by the FY ended March 1975, two years after he left, alongside oils and fats at 28%, foods at 21% and feed products at 15%. He became Chairman in May 1973.
