Background

He joined Lion Fat & Oil (now Lion) in March 1973 and moved to PLUS Corporation 13 years later, in March 1986. At PLUS he became general manager in the product development headquarters in March 1987, head of the ASKUL business promotion office in the sales headquarters in May 1992, and general manager of the ASKUL division in November 1995. With a background in product development at a household goods maker, and as the person who had launched the mail-order business inside a stationery maker, he became Representative Director and President of ASKUL when it was spun off in March 1997. He also became CEO in May 2000.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Commerce (1973)

Selection

ASKUL began as a company carved out of an in-house division of PLUS Corporation, and Shoichiro Iwata, its first president, had no predecessor. He was appointed 11 years after joining PLUS and five years after becoming head of the ASKUL business promotion office. The company started out with the person who designed the business running it while the parent held the capital.

Initiatives

He made business-to-business mail order with internet ordering the core, and non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥161.7 billion in the FY ended May 2006 to ¥197.1 billion in the FY ended May 2011, though that year the company posted a net loss of ¥1.0 billion. After moving to consolidated reporting, net sales built up from ¥212.9 billion in the FY ended May 2012 to ¥387.5 billion in the FY ended May 2019. Operating income halved from ¥8.9 billion in the FY ended May 2017 to ¥4.2 billion in the FY ended May 2018 and ¥4.5 billion in the FY ended May 2019. He stepped down as president in August 2019. His successor was Akira Yoshioka.
