Background

He graduated from Azabu Veterinary College in 1940 and joined Morinaga Rennyu that year. The company's name when he joined was Morinaga Rennyu; it was renamed Morinaga Milk Industry in May 1941 and merged into Morinaga & Co. in October 1942, and the current corporation was established in April 1949. He became general manager of sales in June 1967, a Director in May 1968, Managing Director in November 1972 and Senior Managing Director in June 1976, and was appointed Representative Director and President in June 1979. He came from sales, rising to the board from general manager of sales.

Education: Azabu Veterinary School (now Azabu University) (1940)

Selection

In June 1979 he succeeded Heihachi Inoo as Representative Director and President. In the same month, Isamu Ono, who had served as President and Chairman since 1960, stepped back to Director and senior adviser. Whereas Inoo and Ono were officers who had joined Morinaga & Co., Mitsugu Monzen was a dairy-side career employee who joined Morinaga Rennyu in 1940. In the fiscal year ended March 1979, just before he took office, non-consolidated net sales were ¥244.5 billion and ordinary profit ¥2.3 billion, a recovery from ¥0.6 billion the previous year.

Initiatives

Non-consolidated net sales, ¥244.5 billion in FY ended March 1979, grew to ¥301.3 billion in FY ended March 1985, just before he stepped down, and ordinary profit rose from ¥2.3 billion to ¥4.0 billion. In April 1981 the company launched Picnic, a long-life milk beverage in a handy pack, opening up sales space that did not depend on refrigeration. In September 1984 it concluded a trademark license agreement with Lipton, adding tea beverages to its lineup. In May 1985 it established Morinaga Nutritional Foods, Inc. in the United States, opening its own base overseas.
