Background
He joined Japan Petroleum Exploration (JAPEX) in April 1982. He became an Executive Officer in June 2013, Managing Executive Officer in June 2016, Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 2018 and Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2022. In April 2024 he became Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer, concurrently serving as Representative Director and President of Japan Offshore Petroleum (JAPEX Offshore).

His predecessor was Masahiro Fujita. He became Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer in April 2024. Fujita was an outsider who had joined in 2019 after careers at MITI and Sumitomo Corporation, so the change to Yamashita, who joined in 1982, handed the reins back to a homegrown executive.
