Background
He entered the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in April 1977 and became Director-General of the Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau in July 2008. In November 2010 he became an Executive Officer of Sumitomo Corporation, rising to Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2018. In June 2019 he joined Japan Petroleum Exploration (JAPEX) as Representative Director and Executive Vice President. He was an outsider who came via resource administration and a general trading company.

His predecessor was Shuichi Okada. In October 2019, four months after joining that June, he became Representative Director and President. In the fiscal year ended March 2019, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥268.0 billion, operating profit ¥2.3 billion and net income ¥14.8 billion, a recovery from the previous year's net loss of ¥31.0 billion.
Initiatives
Consolidated results swung from year to year during his tenure. In the fiscal year ended March 2021, net sales were ¥240.1 billion and operating profit ¥4.2 billion, with a net loss of ¥2.7 billion. By FY ended March 2023 results had recovered to net sales of ¥336.5 billion, operating profit of ¥62.1 billion and net income of ¥67.4 billion. In April 2024 he became Representative Director and Chairman, handing the presidency to Michiro Yamashita.
