Background

KDDI was launched on October 1, 2000, through the merger of KDD and Nippon Idou Tsushin (IDO) into DDI as the surviving company. On a simple combination of the three, it had consolidated revenue of ¥2,063.0 billion and 9,700 employees, becoming Japan's second-largest telecom company after NTT. Tanaka became an Executive Officer of KDDI three years later, in April 2003, then Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 2007 and Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in June 2010, spending more than seven years as an executive before becoming President.

Selection

In December 2010 he succeeded Tadashi Onodera as President. Onodera had served as both President and Chairman since June 2005. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2010, consolidated revenue was ¥3,442.1 billion and operating profit ¥443.9 billion, with revenue having fallen for two straight years from ¥3,596.2 billion in the FY ended March 2008. The leading major shareholders were Kyocera at 12.76%, Toyota Motor at 11.09% and Tokyo Electric Power at 7.97%.

Initiatives

Amid the spread of smartphones and mounting pressure from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to cut telecom charges, in April 2016 he made "maximizing the au economic zone" the core management strategy. In January 2017 the company made BIGLOBE Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary. In 2014 it partnered with Myanmar's MPT, stepping into overseas telecommunications. Together with the video and broadcasting gained through the 2010 capital stake in JCOM, he diversified the business beyond telecommunications.
