Background

He became an Executive Officer of KDDI in April 2003, then Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 2007 and Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in June 2010, rising to Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2016; he spent 15 years as an executive before becoming President. In April 2016, just before he became Executive Vice President, KDDI had made "maximizing the au economic zone" its core management strategy, and in January 2017 it made BIGLOBE Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary.

Selection

In April 2018 he succeeded Takashi Tanaka as President. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2018, consolidated revenue was ¥5,041.9 billion and operating profit ¥962.8 billion. During Tanaka's tenure consolidated revenue had grown from ¥3,442.1 billion to ¥5,041.9 billion and operating profit from ¥443.9 billion to ¥962.8 billion, so Takahashi inherited a company on a run of rising profits. The task he inherited was putting into practice the "maximizing the au economic zone" strategy set out in April 2016.

Initiatives

In April 2023 his title was changed to Representative Director, President and CEO, making explicit who was chief executive officer. In April 2024 the company launched a tender offer for Lawson on the premise of joint management with Mitsubishi Corporation, entering retail in a form in which a telecom company brought a convenience store chain under its umbrella. The acquisition cost ¥500.0 billion. It appears to have been a decision to seek, in a customer touchpoint of its own, a place to reinvest the funds accumulated from its telecommunications infrastructure.
