Background
He became an Executive Officer of KDDI in April 2020. He headed the Business Creation Headquarters from April 2021, became Director and Executive Officer in June 2023, and Director, Managing Executive Officer and CDO in April 2024. It took him five years from Executive Officer to President, short compared with seven years and eight months for Takashi Tanaka and 15 years for Makoto Takahashi, both of whom became Executive Officers in April 2003. He joined the executive officer ranks in the 20th year of KDDI, which was launched in October 2000.
Selection
In April 2025 he succeeded Makoto Takahashi as Representative Director, President and CEO. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2025, consolidated revenue was ¥5,917.9 billion and operating profit ¥1,118.7 billion, with operating profit recovering from ¥961.6 billion the previous year. In May 2024 KDDI had just taken on a retail business through its tender offer for Lawson. In February 2025, before taking office, he spoke of a policy of raising the company's "power to connect" to an entirely new level.
Initiatives
KDDI had expanded into areas around telecommunications in April 2016 under the banner of "maximizing the au economic zone," and in May 2024 took on retail through its tender offer for Lawson. Recovering returns from this broadened set of businesses appears to have become the main theme of his first year in office.
