Background

He joined Japan Airlines in April 1978 and built his career in maintenance. He became a department head in the maintenance planning office in December 2002, and in April 2007, as deputy head of the Engineering and Maintenance Headquarters, also served as President of JAL Aircraft Maintenance Narita. He became an Executive Officer in April 2009 and in June that year moved to group company Japan Air Commuter as Representative Director and President.

Selection

In January 2010 three group companies including Japan Airlines filed for corporate reorganization proceedings, and in February their shares were delisted from the First Sections of the stock exchanges. In February 2010 Onishi took on the roles of deputy trustee and President at the same time. Under his predecessor Haruka Nishimatsu, the company had posted an operating loss of ¥53.9 billion and a net loss of ¥65.6 billion on consolidated revenue of ¥1,949.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2009. He leapt straight from an Executive Officer with a maintenance background to President under reorganization proceedings.

Initiatives

In November 2010 the reorganization plan was approved, and in December the operating company Japan Airlines International absorbed the holding company Japan Airlines, along with JALways, which had handled international flights, and two other companies. The reorganization proceedings concluded in March 2011, and in April the company changed its name to Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. and began a joint business with American Airlines. In the fiscal year ended March 2012, consolidated revenue was ¥1,204.8 billion and operating profit ¥204.9 billion.
