Background

He joined Japan Airlines in April 1972. In November 2001 he was head of the finance department while also serving on the secretariat of the corporate planning office's integration preparation committee. In September 2002 Japan Airlines established the holding company Japan Airlines System through a share transfer with Japan Air System and delisted from the First Sections of the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya stock exchanges. Nishimatsu became an Executive Officer of Japan Airlines System in April 2003, a Director in April 2005 and Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in April 2006. The list of executives for the fiscal year ended March 2009 shows no shareholding for him.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics

Selection

In June 2006 he succeeded Toshiyuki Shinmachi as Representative Director and President of Japan Airlines and Japan Airlines International. Shinmachi had become President of the holding company Japan Airlines in June 2004 and of the operating company Japan Airlines International in April 2005, serving less than two years as President. Nishimatsu himself had joined the board only in April 2005, becoming President one year and two months later. In the list of executives for the fiscal year ended March 2009, Tetsuya Takenaka, who joined in July 1970, and Kiyoshi Kishida, who joined in April 1971, served under him as Representative Directors and Executive Vice Presidents. In the FY ended March 2006, just before his appointment, the company posted a consolidated operating loss of ¥41.0 billion and a net loss of ¥40.9 billion.

Initiatives

In October 2006 Japan Airlines International absorbed Japan Airlines Domestic, which handled domestic passenger operations, and in April 2008 it also merged with Japan Asia Airways. In April 2007 the company joined the oneworld airline alliance. Consolidated results recovered to revenue of ¥2,197.4 billion and operating profit of ¥83.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2008, but swung to revenue of ¥1,949.1 billion, an operating loss of ¥53.9 billion and a net loss of ¥65.6 billion in the FY ended March 2009. In January 2010 Japan Airlines International, Japan Airlines and JAL Capital filed for corporate reorganization proceedings.
