Background

He was born in Tokyo in 1903. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Tokyo Imperial University in March 1927 and joined Kawasaki Trust in June that year. He moved to Keisei Electric Railway in January 1940, became a Director seven years later in June 1947, Managing Director that September and Senior Managing Director in December 1949. Joining the board seven years after switching from a trust company, he became Representative Director and President in November 1958, his 18th year with the company.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Economics (now University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics) (1927)

Selection

He became President in November 1958, succeeding Hideo Oyama. Oyama had come to Keisei as Managing Director in June 1942 from the post of Director-General of the Supervision Bureau at the Ministry of Railways, becoming Senior Managing Director in September 1945 and President in November 1955, and he moved to Chairman in the same month of November 1958. Kawasaki had been Senior Managing Director for nine years from December 1949, and the change appears to have been one in which a Senior Managing Director with 18 years in the company succeeded a President brought in from the Ministry of Railways.

Initiatives

His presidency lasted 21 years, from November 1958 to June 1979. The 1970 edition's board list shows Hideo Oyama as Representative Director and Chairman, but no Chairman was appointed from the 1971 edition on. From 1975 the company had three Executive Vice Presidents: Ikujiro Fukuda, who joined in 1938, Hiroshi Shuto, who joined in 1937, and Yasukuni Kajimoto, who joined in November 1964 from the post of Director-General of the Tourism Bureau at the Ministry of Transport. He stepped back to Chairman in June 1979 and became Director and Senior Adviser in June 1981. The lineup can be read as placing career employees and a former bureaucrat side by side as vice presidents.
