Background

He joined Tokyu in April 1971. In April 2004 he became President of the cable TV subsidiary its communications, and returned to the parent's board in June 2007 as head of the Development Business Division, 36 years after joining. He became Managing Director in January 2008, Senior Managing Director in June that year and Representative Director in June 2010. He reached the top not through railway operations but via the development business and an information and communications subsidiary.

He became President in April 2011, succeeding Toshiaki Koshimura. In the fiscal year ended March 2011, the year before he took office, operating revenue was ¥1,152.1 billion and operating income ¥57.1 billion, down for two straight years from ¥1,304.2 billion and ¥65.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2009. Net income had recovered from ¥10.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2009 to ¥40.0 billion. His promotion came the year after he became Representative Director in June 2010, following his time as Senior Managing Director.

Initiatives

Over his seven years, operating revenue was roughly flat, from ¥1,152.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2011 to ¥1,138.6 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2018, but operating income rose 45% from ¥57.1 billion to ¥82.9 billion. Net income also rose from ¥40.0 billion to ¥70.0 billion. The workforce fell from 23,698 to 22,985. His main decision in office was the redevelopment of the Shibuya terminal, concentrating investment on sites freed up by putting the railway underground.
